It's a nightlife that rewards the people who can read the city, who turn up with the right dress code, who know the passwords and who steer clear of the tourist traps.
I've lived in Bangkok for years and I'll take you exactly there: to the places where locals and real expats go, not where the groups in the "Thailand 2026" T-shirts end up.

In 2026 sunset is no longer optional: it's the start of the evening.
Tichuca Rooftop Bar (Thonglor) is still the undisputed king. That tree of colour-changing LED lights has become iconic, but the real secret is getting there at 5:30–6pm: clear view, no queue and the first cocktail at the "happy hour" price. Relaxed dress code, but not casual.
Above Eleven (Sukhumvit Soi 11) is my favourite for an elegant aperitivo: an urban-park vibe suspended over the skyline, excellent Nikkei cuisine and cocktails that never let you down. Book a table around the edge a few days in advance.
Octave Rooftop Lounge and Pastel Rooftop Bar (both on Soi 11) are perfect if you're after a more lounge-y, less "Instagrammable" atmosphere.
And then there are the classics that never set: Sky Bar at Lebua and Vertigo & Moon Bar at the Banyan Tree. In 2026 they're still unmissable, but only if you respect the strict dress code (no shorts, no flip-flops).
2026 tip: the best rooftops fill up between 6:30 and 7:30pm. After 10pm many turn more "clubby" and lose the magic of the view. Get there early or book.
Speakeasies and hidden cocktail bars:
the real treasure of the Bangkok night
Here we get into insider territory.
Teens of Thailand (Chinatown, Soi Nana) is the area's first proper gin bar and it's still a gem. Small, intimate, with a gin of the day and a crowd of creatives and hipsters.
Havana Social (Sukhumvit Soi 11) is a Cuban speakeasy: you go in through a phone booth, ask for the password of the day and find yourself in a 1950s Havana. Insane cocktails and live Latin music.
Rabbit Hole (Thonglor) and Vesper (Silom) are perfect for anyone who wants to drink well without the music blasting. Beautifully designed, bartenders who really know their craft.
Opium Bar and Tropic City in Chinatown are becoming the new mecca for craft cocktails.
You won't find these places in a TripAdvisor "top 10". You only find them if someone points you to them.
Underground, live music
and the real vibes
If after the rooftops you fancy going down a level (in the good sense), the underground/techno scene has exploded:
- Mustache Bangkok
- De Commune
- Inakoma Hard Techno
- Safe Room
Here the crowd is more local and genuinely international, the music is serious and the energy is Berlin-grade.
For anyone who prefers live melodies: Saxophone Pub, The Bamboo Bar at the Mandarin Oriental and Brown Sugar remain untouchable institutions.
